Studying IT programming at Sundsgården Folkhögskola

The course provides basic skills and knowledge in web development. The course will often be project based where most of the teaching is online through distance learning. We work in teams of 4-5 participants in each team and partially individually. Online teaching will sometimes alternate with guest lectures online as well as two physical meetings at Sundsgårdens Folkhögskola. Together we will learn about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and the teams will then be able to deepen their understanding and sharpen their skills within these areas of web development. The course is taught from a beginner perspective. We will discuss the basics of programming, what programming is, and what it can be used for. Starting from basics we will then work our way up to more advanced tools. To a large extent, the individual and teams will search for information on their own since this is such a rapidly changing industry and knowing how to find required information is vital.

Beyond just theory and practice we will at times have guest lecturers. Guest lectures include IKEA, among others. We follow a syllabus with different modules where we work individually, in teams, and as a whole class depending on the course content. By the end of the course the participants will have the skills and knowledge required to create a portfolio that showcases several of the projects created throughout the course.

Study form

Teaching, support, and collaboration take place digitally via Microsoft Teams and GatherTown. Participants must be present in the shared digital classroom in GatherTown between 08:45 and 11:30 every weekday for joint activities and lessons. In the morning, we have lessons, reviews, and discussions as a full class as well as in-depth work in study groups. In the afternoon, participants can work on individual tasks in their study groups and work on group work. Teachers are also available for questions and supervision during the afternoon. Lesson material is uploaded to Microsoft Teams as a database where participants can go back to previous lessons for revision if necessary. Participants must also attend digitally at joint school gatherings that occur, for example, before various holidays and school-wide projects such as Human Rights days and the Christmas market.

From the start of the course, participants are divided into study groups of 4–5 participants per group. Through the study groups, participants can learn from each other and receive support in their studies. The study groups also help participants to feel a sense of belonging. To give participants the opportunity to get to know other participants outside their study group, they are also divided into other groups for project work. Even when participants are working on group projects, they can to turn to their study group for help.

Participant influence

We work actively with participant influence. Participants have the opportunity, both in study groups and in the whole class, to raise questions and concerns about their studies. Suggestions for development and improvement of the course are presented to the course coordinator who, together with other teachers, reviews the improvement opportunities. Participants can also provide anonymous feedback regarding improvement opportunities at the end of the course and to be part of Sundsgården’s student council.
